Nightmare Cinema (2018)
Ranging from stupid to ridiculous to lame, get ready for bad stunt doubles and all-around absurdity. The only story even remotely worth watching was the 4th one about the mother.

🔥 20th Anniversary
The Ring meets Final Destination. Some good ghost spooks once it gets going, but the ending is WTF.

Kill List (2011)
This was just slow, hard to follow, incongruous, with many discrepancies that are never addressed. Not sure why it has such good ratings on IMDB and Rotten Tomatoes, it's not scary and kinda boring.

The House of the Devil (2009)
SO MUCH about this film feels Stephen-King-adaptation-esque (and the brief appearance of Dee Wallace in the beginning makes it even moreso), then suddenly you're slammed into modern horror, then slide back into nostalgia, round-and-round again. Really enjoyable to watch, great style, great horror vibes.

The 100 Greatest Overlooked Horror Movies
"There's hundreds of thousands of [horror] movies and if you don't know where to look, you're bound to miss some good ones. Because of the numerous subgenres within subgenres, the VHS boom of the 80's and the constant stream of new shit being released on a weekly basis, combing through the entire history of horror is a daunting task. This list was made to shine a light on a select few you might not have seen that [Screenage Wasteland contributing author Sailor Monsoon thinks] are worth your time."

The Canal (2014)
CREEP👏TASTIC👏 and more brutal than expected. A refreshing indie descent into madness, especially after watching Coherence which was boring.
Side note: love the low-key 70's Italian horror vibe of this promo art.

Jack Goes Home (2016)
HOOOOO BOY, this was way more art-house than I was expecting. For about the first 50 minutes, it was all drama drama drama, and I'm wondering how is this a horror movie? Then he finally goes into the attic and finds The Box, and everything just goes berserk from there.

🔥 40th Anniversary
Can't believe I waited so long to watch this! I kept forgetting it was a John Carpenter movie and passing on it. Who knew a car could be so sinister.

There Are Monsters (2013)
🔥 10th Anniversary
I was super-skeptical at the beginning of this movie -- it's very obviously low-budget, and I'm not big on the found-footage subgenre generally. Turned out to be totally worth watching. The filmmaker(s) understood horror and it showed.

Post Mortem (2020)
This movie has probably the most mixed reviews ever, but I really enjoyed it. The English overdub on the DVD was awful so I turned it off in lieu of subtitles and I'm glad I did, much better.
There are creepy corpses doing very undead things, and people being snatched into the air and tossed about like ragdolls. Maybe the acting isn't great, but I can deal with that just fine for some good haunts.
One definitely noticeable issue, tho, is the "questionable intentions" of the man with this 10yo girl who ends up being his sidekick -- it's low-key cringey FOR SURE, but doesn't seem malicious. They're connected by death and resurrection, and end up being a paranormal team.
I think maybe a lot of people who don't get what's overall happening in this film just have never heard of a psychopomp. That would explain a lot of confusion/complaints I've seen like "this-and-that is ridiculous and doesn't make any sense at all", well it does make sense if you know about psychopomps.

Happy Death Day 2U (2019)
Rewatched Happy Death Day this weekend, so figured what-the-hell, might as well check out the sequel. Lots of exposition about why the loop(s) happen/ed. These movies are just barely in the horror category, but this 2nd one even moreso removed, with all the sci-fi going on.

The Hidden (1987)
Quite the wild ride of a sci-fi thriller! Kyle MacLachlan killin'👏 the role, as usual, and a few more familiar faces popping up throughout are always fun to spot. Weirdly good indie 80's soundtrack, too, check it out.

Ouija (2014)
Never understood why this movie gets such a bad rap. Sure, it's nothing groundbreaking in the Teen Scream arena, but it at least deserves to be higher up in the barrel. It's got spooky atmosphere, jump scares, a mystery to unravel, and even Lin Shaye! Come on! Overall it's an enjoyable, popcorn, watch-with-friends-in-a-dark-room kinda horror flick.

Dead Birds (2005)
This could have been much better if they didn't put in so much of the generic "demon face" CGI that was all-the-rage in the early 2000's horror industry. You know the face: razor-sharp teeth, black-hole eyes, streaky pallid skin, growling hiss (see photo). There's an excessive amount of that in this movie. Really detracted from an otherwise creepy haunting premise.

Lady in White (1988)
I never watched this as a kid, so I don't have any nostalgic connection to it at all. That being said: it was hard to sit through the incredibly cheesy Hallmark-channel-level 80's heartfelt treacle that comprised a good 50% of the movie. Almost made me quit a couple times. But then there are some genuinely frightening scenes, like a little girl getting strangled to death by an invisible assailant. There was also a surprising amount of heavy content relating to race relations (was this a "kid's" movie?!). In the end, I made it through the whole thing, the guy I figured was the killer from the beginning turned out to be the killer, and I'll probably never watch this again.

The Last Winter (2006)
Too heavy-handed and slow, just not quite interesting. Wendigo "ghosts" didn't make sense within their own mythos, and the attempted Resident Evil-style ending flopped.

Cape Fear (1991)
Hadn't seen this movie in a loooooooooong time, like 20 years -- WOW, is this hard to watch! Straight-up gut-churning psychotic behavior, and nerve-wracking impotence of recourse. Such powerful performances all around. Now I need to dig up a copy of the original to watch.
