Happy Death Day 2U (2019)

Rewatched Happy Death Day this weekend, so figured what-the-hell, might as well check out the sequel. Lots of exposition about why the loop(s) happen/ed. These movies are just barely in the horror category, but this 2nd one even moreso removed, with all the sci-fi going on.

They went totally extra with the wealthy-elite Satanism in this one, and it worked. Written by Grady Hendrix of "Final Girl Support Group" fame. Great soundtrack by Wolfmen of Mars, as well.

The Shed (2019)

Modern-day spin on the classic vampire tale. It was just OK. My son (G) and I agreed: there were a few parts that were great, but not quite enough to elevate the whole film to "good" -- but for opposing reasons...
I thought it was too heavy-handed with the characters' personal dramas, could have used more levity for sure.
G thinks it didn't take itself serious ENOUGH to tip it into "so bad it's good" territory.

Love Lupita Nyong'o ❤️ but this movie didn't quite live up to expectations. Some laughs, and watching Josh Gad cussing and being generally awful was entertaining in itself, but probably won't watch it again.

Better than I expected 🤔

They really did a good job in this remake updating the concept of "Chuckie" for our current technological times. Plus: Mark Hamill as the voice of the new Chucky -- excellent casting!

Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark (2019)

Overall, I liked it. Really great interpretations of the monsters from my beloved childhood Scary Stories! 💖 Guillermo del Toro hit it out of the park on that front. The plot delivery device of the "witch" writing stories in the book, and the background story of all that was also interesting.

Did NOT like the lead actress, or her acting -- that kinda pooped it up for me. Also not a fan of the underlying thread of the Nixon election and Vietnam war 🙄 that was a bit ham-fisted. Yeah, sure, the movie was set in 1968, WHATEVER.
The story could have functioned 100% without the interjection of trite political history. It Reality'd up the Horror in an irritating way, disrupting an otherwise enjoyable movie.

The Dead Don't Die (2019)

The reviews aren't great, but I enjoyed it --- but I can see how other people would not. Would I recommend it? Only to weirdos like me, I guess, lol.

It is slowww and dryyyyy; there is some social commentary re: corporate greed and consumerism that is not subtle and sticks out like a sore-thumb; and one of the character-groups' fate is never resolved to the audience.

Things I liked about it: The cast really saved it for me, Bill Murray and Adam Driver work well together, and Tilda Swinton being weird is always great; the plot is bizarre, but the cause of the zombie outbreak is creative; the running Sturgill Simpson gag (also, the theme song is good); the breaks in the 4th wall. My fave part was probably the WU-PS delivery.
