The Canal (2014)

CREEPπŸ‘TASTICπŸ‘ and more brutal than expected. A refreshing indie descent into madness, especially after watching Coherence which was boring.

Side note: love the low-key 70's Italian horror vibe of this promo art.

There Are Monsters (2013)

πŸ”₯ 10th Anniversary

I was super-skeptical at the beginning of this movie -- it's very obviously low-budget, and I'm not big on the found-footage subgenre generally. Turned out to be totally worth watching. The filmmaker(s) understood horror and it showed.

The Hidden (1987)

Quite the wild ride of a sci-fi thriller! Kyle MacLachlan killin'πŸ‘ the role, as usual, and a few more familiar faces popping up throughout are always fun to spot. Weirdly good indie 80's soundtrack, too, check it out.

Jennifer's Body (2009)

This surprised me, I was expecting total junk. I've avoided it for years because I thought it was just another in the long line of teen vampire flicks; turns out it's something different...

Overlord (2018)

πŸŽƒ Horrorthon 2022 #25

How could I resist a movie with an AC/DC song in the trailer?!

OMG this was crazy as BAAAAALLLLLSSSS! I loved it! Always great to see Wyatt Russell in anything (oh and hey there's Joseph Quinn, too).

Combines the general horrors of war with the specific horrors of reanimated super-soldiers in an underground experimental laboratory. Some sketchy CGI in a couple parts, but doesn't detract from otherwise solid digital and practical effects on-point throughout.

The Wailing (2016)

πŸŽƒ Horrorthon 2022 #21

This one is a significant time and attention investment, at 2-1/2 hours of reading subtitles, but absolutely worth it. Lived up to the hype in a massive way, and the ending was like KAPOW!

Lake Nowhere (2014)

πŸŽƒ Horrorthon 2022 #10

I stumbled on this movie earlier this year while obsessively searching for the best horror soundtracks on vinyl I could get my hands on. Finally watched the actual movie... it was better than I expected! Intense! Much better than the trailer indicates, FYI. With the doofy commercials at the beginning and the vintage style and effects, it's like watching an old VHS tape!

Dog Soldiers (2002)

πŸŽƒ Horrorthon 2022 #9 πŸ”₯ 20th Anniversary

My favorite werewolf movie! The practical effects werewolves are so badass! The pace of the action ramps up and up and up until it's absolutely frenetic. Just really great overall.

The Cursed (2021)

Interesting presentation of the werewolf concept. Atmospheric and brutal period horror, with an adequate amount of story and absolutely lovely cinematography.

The Blob (1988)

Went on a monster movie bender: Tremors, Jaws, Rodan... then realized I've never seen The Blob remake, even though I really like the Steve McQueen original (enough to own a DVD copy).

So totally worth watching! Fantastic remake! Really expanded the horror of the organism, and great practical effects.

12 Hour Shift (2020)

I was not expecting much, but this turned out to be pretty enjoyable. I recommend watching with at least 1 other person to get the most out of it. I'm also going to seek out more Angela Bettis flicks -- loved her in May, then lost track of her completely until now.

Mimic (1997)

Great movie to watch for Twosday! Unique story concept and excellent monsters --- would expect no less for a Guillermo del Toro flick. Great practical effects, and those early-days digital effects held up really well, too.

A Bucket of Blood (1959)

πŸŽƒ Horrorthon 2021 #36

Lonely, socially isolated, "simple" busboy, descends into murderous madness in a desperate attempt to earn acceptance within the local beatnik scene. B-movie GOLD. (and yes, that is Mr. Futterman from Gremlins)

A Classic Horror Story (2021)

πŸŽƒ Horrorthon 2021 #18 πŸ”₯ Release Year

Ok, they got me! This was good.πŸ‘
The title means more than you think it means.
There is quite a bit of body-horror peppered throughout, so be prepared for that.

Quarantine (2008)

πŸŽƒ Horrorthon 2021 #12

This movie is UNDERπŸ‘RATEDπŸ‘

It's an English remake of a Spanish-language film (REC) that was released just 1 year earlier, and so Quarantine was kind of swept aside in the "found footage" craze of turn-of-the-century horror.

In the beginning, the acting can seem a bit stiff, but these are supposed to be "real people" so it's actually part of the gambit.
About 20 minutes-in the action starts to get frenetic and never stops, escalating until there's really never NOT something intensely frightening happening.

I've seen quite a few of the found-footage genre horror flicks, and none of them quite measure up to this one in intensity --- it just has that extra something special.

Last Shift (2014)

Here's the deal: It's low-budget, the acting leaves a lot to be desired, and the ending is predictable, BUT throughout it has some of the best haunting creeps I've seen in a long time. Overall, I'd only give the movie like a 2.5/5, but I do actually recommend watching it solely for the haunt creeps.
