HΓ€xan (1922)
π Horrorthon 2020 #38
Original 1922 silent film, restored.
This was really interesting, and horrifying in its own unique way. A bizarre mix of historical instruction and dramatic presentation... but why devils always churning butter?! Churning butter all the time!

HΓ€xan: Witchcraft Through the Ages (1968)
π Horrorthon 2020 #39
Aging beatniks interpret the original.
WOW this is pretty awesome. You have to have watched the original to appreciate what they've done with it. They sped up the footage a little bit, making it even more surreal. William S. Burroughs' narrations and the translations of the dialogue cards are modernized quite nicely. But by far the BEST aspect is the Jazz score replacing the original score, which really orchestrates the action on the screen in a much more appealing way.

The Hunt (2020)
π Horrorthon 2020 #33 π₯ Release Year
⚠️Trigger warning for... everyone.⚠️
Wow, I can absolutely see why there was controversy about releasing this film in the current political climate. It contains over-the-top stereotyping of BOTH extremes of our two-party system, and a ridiculous fictional conspiracy scenario run AMOK. Betty Gilpin is AπMAπZINGπ, the dark humor is first-rate, and there's a good twist at the end.
P.S. You can find reviews posted by people from both political parties saying this movie is revenge porn for the other side π Now that's some good satire! #offendeveryone

I want to say this move is underrated, but I can't.
Visually it's fantastic, it really is, and the cast is great (Meg Foster, wow!)... but something falls flat along the way... something's wrong, I can't quite put my finger on it... maybe it's trying too hard? taking itself too seriously? too much visual, not enough story? Seems like I should like it more than I do, but I just don't. π€·

Interesting premise, MEH execution.
WAY too much emotional touchy-feely stuff. Adderall striptease sequence was funny, and slow-motion slasher on fire jumping out of 2nd-story window was cool. Could have been better, just fell a bit flat. π€·

The Exorcist III (1990)
π Horrorthon 2020 #20 π₯ 30th Anniversary
One of my all-time FAVORITES!
The absolute pinnacle of The Exorcist series, and an underappreciated gem of the horror genre. Directed by William Peter Blatty himself (original author of "The Exorcist"), and featuring powerhouse George C. Scott and (again) the inimitable Brad Dourif. There is a lot of dialogue (and monologue by the Gemini Killer), but the film style is evocative and atmospheric, enjoyable to watch, with an interesting twist on the classic horror premise of killer-returned-from-the-dead.

Crazy! Tho not really what I would consider a horror film -- it was probably just too violent to leave in the "Action" category only, so they tacked "Horror" on there. Still glad I watched it. I guess the soulless-corporate-bullshit part was petty horrifying. π€

A unique gem amongst the cranked-out B-movie horror schlock of the 60's -- highly recommended to anyone looking for that sort of thing, who has not yet seen this film. The actresses playing the "Mary girls" are fantastic, and it features Lon Chaney Jr. and a young Sid Haig.

Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark (2019)
π Horrorthon 2020 #6
Overall, I liked it. Really great interpretations of the monsters from my beloved childhood Scary Stories! π Guillermo del Toro hit it out of the park on that front. The plot delivery device of the "witch" writing stories in the book, and the background story of all that was also interesting.
Did NOT like the lead actress, or her acting -- that kinda pooped it up for me. Also not a fan of the underlying thread of the Nixon election and Vietnam war π that was a bit ham-fisted. Yeah, sure, the movie was set in 1968, WHATEVER.
The story could have functioned 100% without the interjection of trite political history. It Reality'd up the Horror in an irritating way, disrupting an otherwise enjoyable movie.

One of my favorite vintage horror flicks!
Full of campy goodness: the cultists! the punching! the religious symbolism all mixed together with mythology and astrology into a nonsensical soup...
Hammer Films, Christopher Lee ❤, and I just happened to catch in the opening credits on this viewing that it was written by Richard Matheson, and I thought, "...wait, THE Richard Matheson??", so I looked it up and by-golly it IS, indeed, the sci-fi author of "I Am Legend" fame!
